What is ACLS?
Advanced Cardiac Life Support -ACLS Course offered by the American Heart Association intended for healthcare providers who either direct or participate in the resuscitation of a patient such as emergency department staff, intensive care units, physicians, nurses, paramedics and other professionals who may respond to a cardiovascular emergency. ACLS Classes emphasize the importance of basic life support CPR to patient survival: the integration of effective BLS with ACLS intervention, and the importance of effective team interaction and communication during resuscitation. The Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) course is designed to teach providers the knowledge and skills needed to evaluate and manage the first 10 minutes of sudden cardiac arrest ACLS Algorithms such as ventricular fibrillation/ventricular tachycardia (VF/VT) arrest, tachyarrythmias, and symptomatic bradyarrythmias.
Course Description:
The AHA’s ACLS Course has been updated to reflect new science in the 2010 American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care.
This classroom, video-based (not on line edu cation), Instructor-led course builds on the foundation of lifesaving BLS for Healthcare Providers skills, emphasizing the importance of continuous, high-quality CPR. The ACLS Certification Course highlights the importance of team dynamics and communication, systems of care and immediate post-cardiac arrest care. ACLS also covers airway management and related pharmacology.
While BLS for Healthcare Provider CPR certification is not mandatory, the skills and knowledge of CPR Training, basic rhythm recognition (ECG’s) and pharmacology are required for success.
Course Expectations:
· Pass the CPR AED skills test, bag-mask ventilation skills test and the Megacode test.
· In the ACLS Course, skills are taught in large-group sessions and small-group learning and testing stations where case-based scenarios are presented. Must actively participate in, practice and complete all learning stations.
· Complete the closed-book written ACLS Test with a minimum score of 84%
· Pass 2 ACLS core case scenarios (1 cardiac and 1 peri-arrest scenario) as a team leader.
Course Length:
- Initial -approximately 12 hours (including breaks) over 2 days
- Refresher -approximately 6 hours
- 2 year Certification after the successful completion of written and skills testing
